Football Cigarette cards
Sport and in particular football came to dominate the mind of the average male in the street. The card companies were not slow to appreicate this. A number of football card sets were issued in the early 1900's but the real explosion was in the 1930's when vast quantities of football cigarette cards were produced.
Huge crowds of supporters would watch their local teams in the days when the people playing not only spoke English but usually with a local dialect.
Football was very much still attached to its roots.
It has been said if you were a professional footballer in the 1930's and did not appear on a football cigarette card, you only thought you were a footballer.
