Franklyn Cards : Selling a better grade of card for 25 years.
Lambert & Butler were pretty swift off the mark with Aviation and they were not to lazy out of the blocks when it came to motor cars. This card is from the Motor Cars (Green back) series A issue of 1922 (in 1908 they had issued a series called Motors). They did a second series a year later which closely followed the art style of the first. A set marvellously nostalgic and if Ford and black and white films mean every old car you think off is black then this set is an eye opener. Both sets have 25 cards each.
Lambert & Butler Motor Cars Series A [1922] 25 cards
Lambert & Butler Motor Cars Series 2[1923] 25 cards
Lambert & Butler decided the motorcycle was well worth giving a set to. You have to congratulate them on that. Probably even more evocative of a past age than old cars. Perhaps not as aspirational as a set of Motor cars but strange there were not more sets dedicated to these mechanical wonders. Lambert & Butler Motorcycles [1923]
Players issued a couple of sets imaginatively entitled, Motor Cars. Still there were not prizes for clever titles but fine artwork and interesting descriptions would have ensured the smoker at the time would have been dreaming of getting behind the wheel of these cars. Which at the time would remain a dream for most. The card illustrated is from the second series. The first series follows the same rules of artwork etc.
Players Motor Cars Series A [1936] 50 cards
Players Motor Cars Series 2 [1937] 50 cards
Gallaher liked to produce sets along themes. Not content with one set of VC Heroes they produced 8 Once they started producing film cards they could hardly stop themselves. Then in 1934 they produced this set, entitled Motor Cars (what else?) they managed 24 cards and then forgot to do anymore. A shame but you cannot change history. Gallaher, Motor Cars [1934] 24 cards
Speedway was a relatively new import in the world of Motor Sport so kudos to Players for producing this set in 1937. They have not let Speedway fans down with this one. Players Speedway Riders [1937] 50 cards
Ogdens led the way with an early set entitled, Famous Dirt Track Riders. There is some pretty fanciful artwork going on in the set which all adds to the fun. Issued in 1927 Ogdens often seemed capable of tackling the less obvious subject. My admiration of the output grows over time. Ogdens Famous Dirt Track Riders [1927] 25 cards
