group together cigarette cards sets into themes to make it easier for
those interested in specific subject matter to easily find the sets

Gallaher
Woodland Trees Series [1912] 100 cards
Considered a classic of
its type,
100 cards in total and certainly colourful. Personally I find the cards
often rather overcrowded but it is exhaustive both in content and price
it has to be said.

Wills Flower Culture in Pots [1925] 50 cards
This is more like it.
Flower
Culture in Pots. Dramatic black backdrops and the eponoymous pot taking
a minor role in proceedings. Well done Wills and a deserved entrant on
the classic sets page and given it is over 20 times cheaper than the
Gallaher set above a real case of having you cake, eating it and hardly
having to pay for it.

Gallaher Wild Flowers [1939] 48 cards
Wills does not get it
all its own
way and Gallaher produced this set of cards along with a set of Garden
Flowers the previous year. An interesting foreground and background
effect on this set and for those that like to collect the unusual I
cannot think of another set of cigarette cards with this effect on it.
Of course I am always ready to be proved wrong by people that know
different. I actually prefer the wild flower idea to the cultivated one
(probably because it suggests I do not need to go out into the garden
and make it grow).

Wills Alpine Flowers [1913] 50 cards
An good early example of
a Wills
flower set (someone at Wills was a gardner I assume). Good quality
board my only complaint is the stark white background which can be
difficult to fine in higher grades 80 years later. Still I can and I
do, if it was easy so would everyone else and I would not be one of the
best in the business. So well done Wills.

Wills Garden Flowers by Sudell [1939] 50
cards
From one of the earliest
examples
to one of the last examples. Issued in 1939. The card itself might not
be as thick, the text design on the reverse might have been modernised
but there is no mistaking it is still a quality product. It might only
be 60 years old so it is good to see Wills stuck to its roots right to
the end.

Wills Roses 2nd Series (51-100) 1913 50 cards
This is getting a bit
like a
Wills appreciation page. Still why not, they deserve it for all the
efforts they made on the flower front (I am not even mentioning the
Garden Hints and related series they did). Indeed this card is only
here to represent three series they produced of Roses. Okay you have to
be a real Rose fiend to want all three sets (or a really determined
cigarette card collector) but every collector should treat themselves
to one of these sets. That isn't a salesman talking that's a collector
suggesting.

Players Useful Plants & Fruits
[1902] 50 cards
Some sources
give this as
a 1904 issue, either way, early. It does not quite fit in with the rest
of this page as it has a more commercial angle to it but really it is
just to good to leave out of this line-up. Also it can represent
Players very well in this line up. Good quality card, highly detailed
illustration and that nice use of colour so often in eveidence with the
earlier issues. Not easy to get hold of I don't see any reason why it
will become more easy in future so now might just be the time to get
the set if you want to, there is only one direction the price of this
set is likely to go.

Wills, Flowering Trees and Shrubs [1924] 50
cards
This set is compartable
in detail to the Gallaher, Woodland Trees series but gives more space
to the foliage rather than the tree. Also only 50 cards and less than
half the price.

Wills, Wild Flowers [1923] 50 cards
I'm not going to
apologise for yet another series of Wills. As ever detail, detail,
detail is what a Wills set is all about. Wild Flowers could be another
word for weeds but look at it this way, if they are on someone else's
land you don't have to worry about them.

Wills, Old English Garden Flowers [1910] 50
cards
If they are called Old
English in 1910 you can assume they are even older by the end of the
20th century. Lovely set of cards if only because it represents the
sort of flowers your Great-Grandparents were trying to grow before the
First World War. A different world where gardens were English and you
pottered about it them (or your gardener did)

G.Phillips, Annuals [1939] 50 cards
Just to stop the Wills
'love-in' Godfrey Phillips alos got in touch with its feminine side to
produce a flower series. Doesn't cost as much as many on this page and
that is never a bad thing as there is no real loss in quality as a
result.

Gallaher, Garden Flowers [1938] 48 cards
With this set Gallaher
produced a more conventional format series in terms of artistic style.
It is still obviously a Gallaher set mind.

Wills Trees [1937] L40 cards
As if I cannot find
enough Wills cards about flowers I now show you the most wonderful of
Trees sets. Okay only 40 cards but they are large. Forget that Gallaher
set I showed you at the beginning (I'll let you into a secret it is
over $700US, imagine if they had done it as a set of 100 large cards)
this is the tree set for me, I'd choose it over the Gallaher set
everyday of the week but that's a personal opinion the Gallaher set has
its fans (usually people trying to sell it actually).
