Players
Butterflies [1932] 50 cards
Although I leave you in
no doubt which my favourite Butterfly set is later on this set is
actually very highly rated among people that know what they are talking
about when it comes to butterflies. It really is a wonderful set of
cards.

Players Butterflies & Moths [1904]
50 cards
An early set of cards.
Issued by a number of manufacturers but get this one, they are all the
same series but this is less expensive than the others. Well
illustrated, high quality card. They have stood the passing years very
well indeed. This set finds a home in many a collection.

Wills Garden Life [1914] 50 cards
These are creepy
crawlies doing their creepy thing. Truly unpleasant but you have to
admire the way its done. The same set was done by Lambert &
Butler but only as a series of 25 rather than this series which is 50
cards. I don't know why either.

Lambert & Butler Wonders of Nature
[1924] 25 cards
A pretty varied set as
you would expect given the title. Wonderfully illustrated it reminds me
I should make more effort to tell you about Lambert & Butler

Godfrey Phillips British Butterflies [1927]
25 cards
These are all set
against a solid black background. I have scanned a reasonably high
contrast image here. Some of the butterflies are brown orange
combinations which are not exactly scan friendly.

Gallaher Butterflies and Moths [1938] 48
cards
Gallaher does their
usual commendable job with this set. Nice to see the butterflies and
moths in some sort of context although don't ask me if it is the right
one. Sometimes the backgournd can become a little bit too foreground
but this is me being fussy after seeing thousands and thousands of
cards over the years.

Godfrey Phillips British Butterflies No1
issue [1911] 30 cards
A 30 card series which
is rarer than some of the butterflies it depicts. Although not extinct
you could wait a long time to collect this entire set if you wanted to
capture them in the wild.

Wills British Butterflies [1927] 50 cards
An oddly flat offering by Wills this
one. Somehow the artist has left the things rather two dimensional.
Still it is a good workman like set perhaps more suited to old text
books than cigarette cards mind.

Players British Butterflies (Large) [1934]
25 cards
How many of these sets
could I sell on the back of this scan. Well if I scanned the whole lot
I'd sell more. This really is a first class set. Beautiful subject
matter done beautifully.

Wills, Butterflies and Moths (Large) [1938]
40 cards
Again the large format
is wonderful for these cards and Wills get it right with some lively
illustrations
