Still this is not the real reason this set gets to be remembered. Even though they were 17 odd cards short of a more normal 50 set there was an error on two of the cards.

Card 1, had a picture of Mary (wife of William III) 1662- 1694 but the reverse of the card held a description of Mary 1516-1558. Card 4 had a picture of Mary 1516-1558. However when you turned the cards over you found a description of Mary (wife of William III).

Godfrey Phillips were mortified to discover an error in a set of Royalty cards of all things and immediately withdrew the affected cards. So now you have to accept most card dealers are only going to sell you 35 cards of the 37 as Godfrey Phillips never reissued the cards 1 and 4.

The error cards do exist but they are pretty thin on the ground and sell at about 15 times more than the normal odds. No corrected cards have ever been seen from which you can assume they never were corrected.

Occurrences where sets are difficult to complete are rare but there are a couple of instances in 1925 which will unfold as this examination of 75 years of cards continues.

RJ Hill had something of a bumper crop of card issues in 1925 and one of the sets coming out of the packets was The Railway Centenary [1925]. Quite why the rest of the card world had managed to miss an opportunity like this is difficult to judge. It is not as if they were averse to the odd railway issue.

Indeed in the latter half of the 1920's someone at Churchman's seems to have become obsessed with the things. These cards were issued in both normal and large size something this firm was very keen on doing.

I mentioned earlier a lot of the issuers at least seemed to shy away from the year 1925 to issue cards but Alexander Boguslavsky (the best name in the business apart from perhaps Gaspa) decided to make 1925 the year.

What have I against these cards?

The company had started issuing cards in 1923 (Conan Doyle Characters) which came out in two versions. 1924 saw two issues roll of the presses, Big Events on the Turf.

This being postcard size issue as befitted the title but what it had in size it took away in numbers as it was a set of 12 cards and a more conventionally sized (25 normal cards) entitled Mythological Gods and goddesses.

In 1925 they put all the two years previous experience together. They issued Sports Records, a series of 25 cards which was followed by a second series of 25. Winners on the Turf issued again as a series of 25 cards but can be collected in two different variations.

This set was also issued as a large size series, the only large size they were ever to do.

Why?

Clearly Alexander Boguslavsky were working on a version of the theory that if you are going to burn brightly it is going to be briefly.

It would not be kind to suggest the 1925 output might have been one year to long for the firm to be able to give this theory its true justice but there you have it.

Rest assured there are going to be more pages which are going to relate to the cards which were issued 75 years ago this year.

Although there is one series of cards I am only going to mention once and no more. 1925 was the year Millhoff issued the DeReske Rilette Pictures, all 290 of them in 7 series of M sized cards.

What have I against these cards? Nothing more or less anyone would have once they had sorted out the numbers I once did for peanuts and now see they are worth a little bit more.

In fact they are of a price where I would cheerfully sort them, imagine that. Actually 'cheerfully' might be a bit much.
