Stage debut in 1922 as a 'super' in R.U.R.
Made his name in film in 1930 as a jailed killer in The Last Mile.
1930's was his decade of originality before something of a crust grew over his performances.
A drinking spell got him a brief visit to jail. Later in 1935, Fox fired him MGM hired him.
A man capable of playing the boss or the labourer, he made many a movie.
And then there is that relationship with Hepburn, which might have been good on-screen, but in real life his treatment of her is not pleasing to read about. I'm loathe to admit I like his performances.
Fury [1936] sums him up.
His great work was basically behind him by 1942.
