Studied
architecture and graduated in the depression years.
Made his film debut in The Murder Man [1935] after working steadily
in theatre.
Early roles had him as a bemused country boy (A kind of decent version
of Hugh Grant). Played a heavy once in Rose Marie [1936].
Sang in Born to Dance [1936] which proved he was not a singer.
Finally found a place in romantic comedies.
Once he made created the public image, very much, It's a Wonderful
Life [1946] he started dismantling it in a series of Hitchcock movies,
a process which had started in some hard-edged Western action.
In the early 50's got an unusual contract with MGM in which he got
to share the profits of his films.
Vertigo [1958] was the high point for just about anyone involved.
Stewart became somewhat lazy in his portrayals after this.
