Poland suffered something of a set back as a country as its third and final independent territory was shared out between Prussia, Austria and Russia.
Effectively this was the end of Poland as a country.

The trouble started a few years earlier when in 1772 an elective Polish monarch failed to instill any strong central authority which allowed Prussia, Russia and Austria to create the first partition of the country.
This was followed by a second partition in 1793 by Prussia and Russia.
All this was a far cry from the days when Poland was a power to be reckoned with. In the 15th and 16th Centuries, allied with Lithuania it was one of the major European powers.
It was a long time before the Polish people were able to reclaim their country.

Although Napoleon had promised to recreate Poland if they assisted him in his campaigns he largely failed to live up the promise.
It was not until the aftermath of World War One that independence was regained and restored as a soveriegn state.
It was only a few short years before Germany invaded in 1939 having agreed to carve up the country with Russia. The Polish being rather complacent about the possibility despite a history of such things happening to them.

After the Second World War Poland was restored, although with a loss of land mass as it lost twice as much land mass to Russia as it gained from Germany when the map of Europe was redrawn by the allies.
Poland was to remain a Communist nation until 1989 when civil unrest brought about the creation of a non communist coalition government.
