Franz Liszt (1811-1886)

F ranz Liszt

was born October 22nd, 1811 in Hungary.

Perhaps best known as a composer, he does have a legitimate claim to be one of the greatest pianists of all time.

...noticed his son's interest in music and began teaching him the piano from the age of six.

His father, Adam, noticed his son's interest in music and began teaching him the piano from the age of six.

By the age of nine he was playing in concerts and won an award to study in Vienna.

The family move to Paris in 1823 and his father devotes himself to his son's career. During the 12 years he was there he was introduced and got to know many of the famous creatives living there during the period.

In 1825 Liszt plays in London before King George IV and finishes his opera Don Sache at the age of 14.

In 1826 his father (Adam) dies after a brief illness.

WILLS, MUSICAL CELEBRITIES [1912]

In 1833 he met the French Countess Marie d'Agoult (who wrote under the name Daniel Stern). their relationship lasted until 1844 bearing three children.

In 1837 Liszt defeats Thalbery in the famous Duel and just to prove there is nothing new the following year platers a charity concert for the Pest flood victims (something he did again in 1876).

From 1839 to 1847 Liszt toured the Old World but in 1847 he virtually ceased all playing in public. It is also the year he met a Russian Princess Carolyn Sayn-Wittgenstein. She remained his companion for the remainder of his life.

From the 1848 to 1861 he was a musical director at the Grand ducal court of Weimar after which he spent 10 years in Rome studying theology to become a secular cleric.

In 1859 his son, Daniel dies at the age of 13.

The following year he writes 'Two Episodes from Lenau's Faust' and 'Les Morts' in memory of his dead son.

In 1862 there is more sadness when his daughter dies in childbirth and in 1866 his mother dies.

  ON THIS DAY...

After 1871 he divided his time between conducting, teaching and composing.

By the time he died on July 31st, 1886 in Germany he had produced some 350 compositions, collaborated or wrote eight volumes of prose and did over 200 piano arrangements and transcriptions for other composers whose careers he wished to advance.
