Robert Louis Stevenson was born.
One of the great creative minds of literature he was born in Scotland and studied civil engineering (his fathers profession) and law.
first lines
His health was delicate and always had been. This had prompted the switch from civil engineering to law.
In 1871 he began contributing to Edinburgh University Magazine and the Portfolio.

Fortunately he decided to pursue a writing career and began by publishing essays and travel pieces. The travel having been prompted by a search for warmer climes to relieve the symptoms of tuberculosis.
His decision to write was against the wishes of his parents.
His first book, 'An Inland Voyage' was published in 1878, prompted by a canoe trip on 1876.
That same year, The New Arabian Knights was published.
love
It was also at this time he fell in love with Fanny Vandergrift Osborne and American who was separated from her husband.
When she returned to San Francisco in 1879 Stevenson followed and married her.
They returned to Scotland the following year.

There followed a period of productivity which was quite remarkable for one in such frail health.
Treasure Island [188]. Prince Otto and the Child's Garden of Verse [1885], Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde [1886], Kidnapped [1886].

It seems the tale of his wife throwing the first draft of The Strange case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde into the fire so diabolical was it, is basically so much eyewash. Probably invented by the woman herself after the death of R.L.S.
In 1887 he went to America and then headed for the South Seas.
The hope was this climate would ease the symptoms of tuberculosis he was suffering.
They settled in Samoa where he died in 1894.
legacy
There has never really been a definitive Jeykll and Hyde in movie history so the character never really took off in public imagination like Dracula and Frankenstein.
| ...the tale has all the ingredients of great horror. | |||
This is a great shame as the tale has all the ingredients of great horror.
It got off to a good start as a stage play. Richard Mansfield [1857-1907] an American actor played the lead role and was meant to create such an effective transformation scene women fainted.
It was also the time of the White Chapel murders and sometimes the play and the murders have been linked.

In 1931 there was Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde in which the main character was played by Fedric March.
It was a role which won him an Oscar.
I saw the movie a little while ago, the first time in a long time and it was a grand tale told well, worth watching.
