World War One stopped his entry into cricket until the age of 24 for Yorkshire.
For 14 years he opening the batting for the county with Percy Holmes.
It was this partnership that put on 555 runs for the first wicket against
Essex on Jun 16, 1932.
This beat the previous record of 554 the record set up by JT Brown and
J Tunnicliffe in 1898, also of Yorkshire fame.
They put up 100 partnerships on no fewer than 74 occasions.
For England had the same sort of success with an opening partnership with
Hobbs.
A patient batsman he knew the importance of defensive strokes in getting
to his many centuries.
He was capable of letting rip with the bat to some effect. Against the
fast bowling of Farnes and Nichols he went from 100 to 194 in 40 minutes.
