First English batsman to hit a century in each innings of a Test, a feat he did in 1923.
Known as 'Jack' he was the son of Tom Russell the Essex wicket-keeper.
Played for Essex from 1908-1930. More effective than attractive with the bat.
He managed to score 102 for England at the Oval Test during the rather grim 1921 series.
