Slow-medium spin bowler for Essex 1890-1913. Favoured the off-break but could produce a leg-break for variety and often wicket taking effect.
Twice took 17 wickets in a match, something equalled by AP Freeman.
He first did this against the Autralians in 1893 and two years later against Hampshire.
Best season was 1895 when he came fifth in the bowling averages league (1797 wickets for less than 15 runs apiece)
He was only asked to play for England once in 1899 against Australia.
