Hampshire mainstay for some 30 years.
Lett-handed batsman of the first water.
One of the great run scorers of his age, his run total only exceeded by
Sir Jack Hobbs, F.E Woolley & E Hendren.
Also bowled (slow spin) and took 277 wickets.
For those that collect batting mannerisms when preparing to face a ball
he would place his bat in the block-hole shuffle his feet toward that
point and touch the peak of his cap.
Scored over 1000 runs in 27 seasons.
Scored 2000 or more 9 times.
Scored 3000 or more once.
His defence was such he could remain at the crease for considerable periods
of time should that become necessary, something of a lost art in the modern
England squad, or any for that matter even thought wickets favour the
batsman to an un-necessary degree.
Spent the last 10 years of his life blind but this did not stop him 'watching'
Hampshire matches.
