First played for Nottingham against Essex in 1921. Took till 1925 to find a regular place in the team. Having done so beame the first wicket-keeper to score 1000 runs in a season. Managed the same trick in 1928. Retired in 1937 because of a thumb injury. Never played a Test despite keeping wicket to Voce and Larwood the England fast bowlers.
