Played for Middlesex regularly from 1909 to 1937.
Fast feet allowed him to play the pull shot better than just about anyone else of the time.
Did 6 tours with England.
Highest first class score was 301 not out against Worcestershire.
Made over 1000 runs in 10 seasons, 2000 in 12 and 3000 or more in three.
In 1933 he caused a stir at Lords when he came to the crease wearing a reinforced cap.
He explained he needed the protection because he had been struck on the head two years previously by the fashionable (and potentially deadly) short bouncer.
Had a career in Association football playing for QPR, Coventry City, Manchester City and a 'Victory' international for England in 1919.
