He scored heavily as opening bat
With his batting partner Sutcliffe (an odd couple if ever) they put on opening centuries 69 times.
His form was good right up to the end and his decline was swift.
In 1932 he was part of a 555 run first stand and in 1933 ended with a batting average of 19.25.
