A very successful England and Sussex Captain.
The 1924-5 Tour of Australia showed the first glimmer of hope in the dark tunnel English cricket had been in for some while. Did actually manage to win one Test, the first since 1912 against Australia.
England did not win the series but at times looked like winning.
A cruel injury in 1924 at the Oval when batting for the Gentleman against the Players meant the end of his bowling.
He was struck over the heart and although seriously injured insisted on continued play.
Later he remarked it was 'probably the worse thing I ever did.'
This effectively put an end to his career.
