| The last survivor of the Notts XI that played the touring Australians in 1878. Was part of the MCC team beaten by Australia in 1878. A victory which rocked English cricket. Flowers did score 11 of the total 19 MCC runs in the second innings. 1883 probably his best year scoring 1144 runs in the season. Played for England against Australia in Australia 1884-85 and once in England 1893. Retired to become an Umpire but failing eyesight cut that short. Went back into the lace trade and at the time of his death was emploted by a hosiery manufacturer. Also has the misfortune to have the shortest match on record as his benefit match. On 23 May 1899, Middlesex v Somerset. Middlesex scored 86 runs in the first innings. Somerset only managed to score 35 in the first and 44 in the second. Within three hours and five minutes of starting it was all over Middlesex winning by 7 runs. |
