Popularly known as 'The Guv'nor'
Career began in 1881 with Surrey, aged 23.
Forced to play his last match in 1904 because of failing eyesight.
Took a while to get into his stride.
In 1893 had a serious eye infection which meant he lost a season.
1895-1902 scored over 2000 first class runs in each of those seasons.
1903 again his eyes troubled him and for some matches wore glasses.
May 1899 at the Oval against Somerset he scored 357 not out.
Also scored 100 before midday at the Oval, a rare feat
He took part in 8 Test matches against Australia (94 at Lords in 1894 being his best).
Also involved in the 1887-88 season when two English teams visited Australia.
Also a good slip fielder.
